Quiz question: Who is the megastar tenor who has mastered a remarkably diverse repertoire and is able to dominate bass roles thanks to his astounding vocal range? Fans of the vocal greats will know the answer: Jonas Kaufmann, who has gifted the Müpa Budapest audience with unforgettable experiences on more than one occasion. Now we await him once again, this time for an evening of arias, the two parts of which present us with polar opposites in terms of style and means of expression. The first part features Verdi, Ponchielli and Leoncavallo, while the second is dedicated to the works of Wagner.

Versatility: This is one of the keywords that is the secret to the German singer's unique success. Born in Munich to the representative of an insurance company and a nursery school teacher, Kaufmann has performed in an incredibly wide range of eras, styles and genres since he began his career in Saarbrücken in 1994. If there is anyone who cannot be categorised, much less pigeon-holed, it is him. He has sung Mozart and Bizet, Puccini and Massenet, Wagner and Britten, Beethoven and Schubert, Busoni and Lehárt, Verdi and Korngold, as well as protestant chorales and Christmas songs. He is at home in the genre of the Lied (a frequent collaborator is no less than Helmut Deutsch), his performance of the ninth symphony has won widespread acclaim, he has performed in countless oratorical works, and appeared at the leading opera houses with the world's top conductors - but behind every performance is the same objective: to achieve total alignment with the work, role or part, as well as the philosophy of the composer. We can be sure to expect the same on this evening, when he will partner up with the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jochen Rieder to perform the operatic masterpieces listed on the programme.

Conductor: Jochn Rieder
Featuring: Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra
