Behind the ‘pop music in a time machine' concept are arrangements of familiar contemporary pop hits and golden-oldies that are swinged-, jazzed- and doo-wopped-up before being planted in Motown-sounding soul. This simple but wonderful idea is one that works perfectly.

Despite growing up surrounded by musical instruments, it took quite a long time for him to eventually settle on a career in music. Always powerfully drawn to the sacred, Omar Faruk Tekbilek is one of Turkey's most influential performers of world music, and at Müpa Budapest in April he will bring new life to the noblest musical traditions of the Middle East.

It is always a thrill to reflect on the fact that, even though the vast majority of Richard Wagner's oeuvre consists of his operas and music dramas, and the singers who perform in them on the world's top stages are exceptional artists, the most popular parts of these works, which can also be played independently, are the orchestral sequences.

ERIKA MIKLÓSA

Béla Bartók wrote some of his most wonderful and, in the traditional sense of the word, beautiful music in the final years of his life, when he was living as a voluntary émigré in the United States. Both at that time and after the composer's death, there were many who wondered whether Bartók was making artistic concessions in these compositions: had he been influenced by the tastes of the American audience?

György Orbán: Symphony No. 2 - world premiere

Eliades Ochoa's performance at Müpa Budapest is sure to be one of the most exciting concerts of 2024. Although the Cuban singer/guitarist has been a famous musician in his native country since the 1970s, it was only at the turn of the millennium that the wider world first encountered his name, thanks to the Wim Wenders documentary on the Buena Vista Social Club.

Dávid Lamm has been on the lam. Which should come as no surprise. Who hasn't been affected by the 2020s and the dispiriting multitude of global catastrophes? A musician, at least, can find refuge in the world of sound. Lamm duly created a new project by the name of Skidaddle.

Barrière, Cassadó, Debussy, Lutosławski, Ravel

Everyone is welcome to come in colourful clothes, the programme is a mere 50 minutes in length (without an interval), and the audience sits in close proximity to the organist. Performing the May programme, the fourth instalment of the series, will be Péter Mekis, a representative of the younger generation.

A nibelung gyűrűjében beteljesedő gigantikus színházi előadás a Rajna hűvös mélyén kezdődött, a folyó kincsét őrző sellők játékával, s az őket csalódottan bámuló Alberich, a nibelung hasztalan vágyakozásával. A szánalmasan csúf és a vízben esetlenül mozgó lény elkeseredésében könnyű prédájává vált a világ feletti uralom vonzásának, és a szerelmet fennhangon elátkozva elrabolta a Rajna kincsét.
