Massenet: Cendrillon

On New Year's Day, the Met will be broadcasting a fairy tale opera that guarantees fun for the entire family to a global audience. The French opera version of the Cinderella story, which has been part of the house's repertoire since the 2017/18 season in a lively humorous staging by Laurent Pelly, is now waiting for us in English and with child-friendly cuts. Assuring that the work's French charm will come through in full are artists like the lovely American mezzo-soprano with an irresistable voice Isabel Leonard and conductor Emmanuel Villaume.

Jules Massenet's 1899 Cendrillon has been undergoing a veritable renaissance on the world's opera stages since the early '00s, and primarily thanks to Laurent Pelly's widely staged exploratory production, which evokes the world of storybooks, and even a physical storybook itself, with sweet and playful irony. The HD broadcast audience already got to see this production a few years ago, with Joyce DiDonato in the bountiful and superbly exploited principal role. At the centre of this holiday version of Cendrillon scaled down to accomodate children's attention spans will be another international star with elemental dramatic skills: Isabel Leonard. Massenet's opera is dominated by female vocal types, and as such, even the fairy tale prince charming becomes a trouser role, in this case the Toronto-born Emily D'Angelo, whose star is rising rapidly. Portraying the fairy godmother will be the British-Australian soprano Jessica Pratt, who won admiration at the Müpa Budapest performance of I puritani, while the baritone Laurent Naouri will bring his lavish acting talents to a major part in the story written for a male singer.

The 'Metropolitan Opera Live in HD' transmissions have been made possible through the cooperation of our partner, Cikánek Management.

Our offer

In almost every biography of the group's career, you can read that Quincy Jones has called them the "the baddest vocal cats on the planet”. This opinion would probably be shared by Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald and Whitney Houston, all of whom worked alongside Take 6.

Daniel Auber FRA DIAVOLO, BANDIT OPERA IN TWO PARTS Opera in three acts, two parts, in Hungarian, with Hungarian and English surtitles

A rainbow of sounds from the orchestra, enigmatic dialogues and mysterious riddles. Not to mention a treacherous dwarf and a glorious young hero. Who after slaying a dragon and tasting its blood, is able to understand the prophetic singing of a bird. And then crosses through a wall of fire to discover both the woman who is his mate and, through his love for her, fear.
